{My Thoughts:}

If I had a star rating system, of one to five, with five being the best you could get, I think I'd be rating RAGE at 6 stars.

While I did enjoy HUNGER, the first book in Jackie Morse Kessler's series about the riders of the apocalypse, RAGE instantly rose to my list of favorite books -- which is a VERY difficult list to get onto, mind you.

While HUNGER gave us a look at anorexia through Famine, RAGE gives us a look at cutting and self-mutilation through War. And for this, I am forever grateful. I see sooooo much media talk down to cutters, label them with titles such as "emo" (I can go on a rant for hours about that, don't doubt me), and all around don't see the dangerous addictions that real cutters struggle with. It is a battle within themselves, which most people refuse to address anymore from what I've seen. They think it's about the attention -- yet true cutters feel sick at the idea of someone finding out about their problem.

We start RAGE with Missey's cat dying, and her very first glimpse of Death (the horsemen, not the experience) as well as the symbol of office for War -- a sword. But Missey doesn't claim her title until a little while later, when she most definitely needs it.

The references of "needing the blade" are perfect in so many ways, and make Jackie's choice for War being a cutter all the more perfect. As mentioned before, people don't realize cutting is an addiction. So the fact the Missey battles her need for the blade that she cuts with, and later the blade that serves as her symbol of office, went hand in hand together. Further proving just how brilliant I find Jackie to be.

RAGE is also thicker than HUNGER was, coming in at 228 pages this time. While some books and their series don't do so well when they try to drag out the story line, it doesn't feel that way with RAGE. My time with Missey wasn't painful, or forced, or dull. I kept reading and reading, and was horribly bummed out when I was finished and didn't have the next book to read.

The story line is fabulous, and the more in-depth look at the horsemen and characters in general was wonderful. To no surprise, I'm sure, Death is my favorite character for multiple reasons, and getting to see him a lot more as well as watch how he interacts with all of the horsemen. Not to mention his chemistry with Missey was incredible.

To sum it up, RAGE was a dark, but humorous look at another very real problem facing several young adults these days. It lived up to my expectations and then some, giving me more of all the story elements the book needed, and none of the silly stuff it didn't. Again, I say this is the book that the world needs right now. There's a reason I arrange the books at Walmart differently now -- blocking out some of the mainstream, overly lusted after books of little quality, and sitting copies of HUNGER and RAGE where people can see their gorgeous covers and buy them. A perfect read for anyone - male, female; young, old; etc. Hell, if my very picky boyfriend can love it, there must be something to it. ;)

When I heard the concept of HUNGER, as well as who was writing it, I was incredibly excited. Jackie has a brilliant gift, and her premise was just the sort of story I've been waiting for. It took me damn near forever to get ahold of a copy of HUNGER (right after it's sequel, RAGE, debuted), but I finally picked up both books whenever my local Walmart started carrying them.

So, was it well worth the wait?

Did it meet my already high expectations?

No, it didn't meet them... it exceeded those expectations.

HUNGER is a painfully real look at a very hard to swallow (excuse the pun) issue -- and I don't mean the Apocalypse. Lisabeth Lewis struggles with her Thin voice, an ever present reminder of how she isn't thin enough, forcing her to obsess over calories, excersize way too much, and eventually attempt an overdose to rid her of her wretched life.

That is, until salvation comes in the form of Death, who bears no only a striking resemblence to a beloved dead rockstar, but also a scale -- the sign of office for the horsemen, Famine, the Black rider of the Apocalypse.

Lisa denies she has a problem for quite some time, as most girls do. But as she sets off into the night to do her job as Famine, she sees what real hunger is. To make any difference as Famine, Lisa must realize what she's doing to herself as well.

HUNGER is the sort of book the world needs right now, and it should be gracing the shelves of every library and every bookstore -- not sparkly Momon propaganda.

It's a smart way of showing the real life horror in eating disorders, without sounding preachy or making it seem "cool". HUNGER shows girls struggling with self image that they aren't alone, while also opening their eyes to just how difficult it is in other places, and that the food they waste is food that could save some child somewhere else. I see HUNGER helping at least some girls to get help. And even if it changes only one life, then that's a damn good step in the right direction.

Review: Blue Moon by Alyson Noel

[Thoughts:]

I fell in love with Evermore and couldn't wait to immediately dive into the pages of BLUE MOON. But, as I always am with series books -- I was also weary. Sometimes sequels don't live up to my expectations.

However, BLUE MOON not only met but surpassed what I expected of it. My favorite characters stayed true to their natures (well, except for a twist I don't wanna reveal.) Even the not-so-important-but-still-memorable Miles and Haven. And speaking of characters -- after the exit of the Big Bad from the series in Evermore, there of course needed to be a new, even more powerful character to draw our intrigue. Enter Roman, gorgeous bad boy with an accent. There's something about Roman that Ever doesn't trust. But she can't see the tattoo of the Rogue Immortals on him, so she can't figure out exactly what it is about him.

But even then, when Ever's life begins to turn upside down, she knows that somehow Roman is behind it.

Personally, I adore Roman and think he really adds to the series as a character -- good, bad, mediocre. Whatever. He's made an impression. I love the interaction between him and other characters -- especially Ever.

And once Ever learns who Roman REALLY is... things only get more interesting.

I love that Ever must stand mostly on her on in this. A HUGE pet peeve of mine is when a good strong main character abandons the strength the used to have solo only because they're with someone. I also adore even more art history references, making me a happy girl. =]

So, all in all, Blue Moon stands true to the series and makes me love it even more. If you're a fan of Evermore -- fear not, the sequel doesn't disappoint.

CRAVING... To Read: GUARDIAN OF THE GATE by Michelle Zink

Mmmm... I love Michelle Zink, as well as her first novel, PROPHECY OF THE SISTERS. So, of course I look forward to the next installment in the series. I'm digging this description and the fact that it makes me hunger for the day I can snatch it up and devour it. Plus, you gotta love that cover!

Spreading the Word: PAYA

So, one of the things I love about the internet is being able to connect with great people. One of the dearest friends I've made online is my friend Harmony (Note: This is her blogger name, since I don't want to release her actual name.)

Harmony is a fellow Book Blogger (or Reviewer, if you will) and writer, as well as an incredible critique partner of yours truly. It's safe to say this girl is seriously a book lover. And she decided to share this love with others in her state by starting PAYA: Bringing YA to PA, a nonprofit organization with the mission of getting more YA (Young Adult) books to the libraries in PA.

PAYA seems to be working on smaller projects all the time, with auctions and bake sales to raise money for libraries in PA. But the BIG event is this August:

PAYA: Bringing YA to PA is an organization started by blogger Harmony of Harmony Book Reviews. It's dedicated to raising money and collecting books for libraries across the state of Pennsylvania. Since its beginning in October of 2009, PAYA has raised over $1,000 and collected hundreds of books for libraries across the state of Pennsylvania.

PAYA's main fundraiser is an annual one-day festival. This year it will be held in West Chester, Pennsylvania on August 21st. It will feature over 15 authors, including Amy Brecount White, Stephanie Kuehnert, Jeri Smith-Ready, Josh Berk, Jon Skovron, Jennifer Hubbard, Shannon Delany, and more. The signing will run from 1pm-3pm. Books will be sold by Children's Book World from Haverford, PA. The festival will also feature two writing workshops, one aimed directly at teens and another at any aspiring writer. Fundraisers such as a basket raffle and used book sale will be held during the signing as well. Harmony ROCKS! And I was so excited about this project, I convinced my mom to let me head up to PA for the event. Unfortunately for me, with all my procedures and this suckish infection making me sick, I am pretty sure I don't get to attend. BUT, I can do my very best to promote the hell out of it! I'm hoping I'll be able to attend next year, and possibly even help out some.

So, check out the PAYA site, do what you can to help and spread the word, and if you can -- attend the PAYA Festival and meet incredible authors. I know I envy everyone that gets to go!

A Book by It's Cover(s): Prophecy of the Sisters

I love seeing the changes in covers that some books get. A lot of the time, it does wonders for the author and for the sales of the book itself. And as I've noticed this, I've also found myself wanting to make some posts about some of my favorite or some of the most recent changes. For instance...

The gifted author, Michelle Zink, has already undergone a change with the cover of her incredible debut gothic novel, PROPHECY OF THE SISTERS.

Now, personally, I have the first two versions myself ( the ARC and the hardback first edition.) But I do adore the new cover, and find myself tempted to add it to the collection. I'm very glad the ARC cover changed, because I wasn't all that fond of it. And I love the first edition cover, the mysterious appeal of the twin statues and the rose -- plus, there's something almost... unsettling about it, which I found to be an ideal fit with the gothic theme. But the newest cover is rather stunning, and showcases the sisters for us. It has a nice composition to it, still holds some mystery about it, and will probably draw more appeal to more readers with this fresher cover. I definitely don't see this as a bad cover upgrade.

And, no matter what cover it has, I still say you need to rush out and get yourself a copy of Prophecy of the Sisters by Michelle Zink. She's extremely gifted, not to mention a wonderful woman all around.

[Thoughts:]

I was a little unsure about the first book in the Immortals series by Alyson Noel entitled EVERMORE. I heard a mixture of things about it -- I heard it was INCREDIBLE, and hard to put down. And then I also caught word it was a "rip off" of Stephenie Meyer's TWILIGHT. That bit of news particularly bothered me, since I'm definitely NOT a fan of Ms. Meyer or her work, especially after I met her in person some time after New Moon came out and found she was VERY disrespectful to her fans. But ANYWAY, back to EVERMORE. I decided to get it over with, moved it up on my To Be Read pile, and purchased each installment as they came out.

And I am SO glad that I did!

EVERMORE is a unique take on life, weaving fantasy and reality beautifully by integrating aspects of various religions/spirituality/beliefs/customs/etc. with history and the modern day. There isn't some insane suspension of disbelief, which a a bit refreshing for a more supernaturally themed novel. Don't get me wrong, I love my crazy out there books too, but this particular book really entertained me with how easily she made it all flow together.

Alyson Noel gives a great cast of characters to go along with the already intriguing storyline. Each are memorable and unique, from the curious Ever with her psychic abilities, to the dashing and mysterious Damen, and especially Ever's best friends -- two misfits, Miles and Haven. Not to mention, Ever's lovable (and dead) little sister Riley.

Another thing I personally enjoyed in this series in general has been the art history references. I don't recall if they are AS prominent in EVERMORE, but I know it definitely is in BLUE MOON, SHADOWLAND, and the newest -- DARK FLAME. And, seeing as I'm an Art Major in college, one that really loves her Art History courses, I love reading the references and know exactly the artist or piece being referred to. I feel like earing an A in History of Art I and II is paying off in my everyday life.

EVERMORE is the sort of book I enjoy reading -- the kind that stands out from everything else out there -- no matter what some people may think. EVERMORE is the sort of book that delights me in the fact that once I think I have everything all figured out, I end up being proven completely wrong and left speechless.

So, head out and pick up Alyson Noel's EVERMORE. You won't regret it.

I'm a HUUUUUGE Vampire Kisses fan, and absolutely adore Ellen Schreiber. And after reading the sixth book in the VK series, ROYAL BLOOD, I'm dying to get my hands on LOVE BITES! Plus, I'm in LOVE with the new covers for the books. Not that I didn't love the older covers, cause I did. But these new ones.. they're just GORE-geous.

Never Fear

So, with this insanely horrible infection I've had that's made me pretty sick, I'm a bit off schedule. But, never fear! I'll be attempting to continue forward this week. The only day I MIGHT drop off the radar is on Tuesday (tomorrow) because I'm having my second of three procedures to try and make me all better vs. dying. The third procedure is next Tuesday, so expect me to possibly disappear then, too, unless I manage to get online and write a semi-decent post.

Anyway...

Like a zombie fresh out of the grave, I have returned to you, my loyal readers!

Okay, I'm not a zombie or anything. (Which doesn't explain this weird craving for brains. Hm.) I've just been suffering from my computer being down, followed by college finals, followed by medical junk. BUT -- I've been at work all the same, though I haven't been able to post. I've got several reviews lined up, Wanting On Wednesday's to post, and more goodies to share. So stay tuned, folks. The blog is about to revive, with more life than ever!

As you can see, it's already undergone it's first bit of change - a makeover! You like? I felt like the blog was a little Blah, and didn't quite show much in terms of personality and uniqueness. But that's changing up as we speak.

Women In Horror Month

I've loved the horror genre since I was a little girl. In fact, by sixth grade, I had my middle school locker adorned with screenshots of Freddy, Michael, and Jason. Of course everyone thought I was a bit of an -*ahem*- freak, because I was born and raised in small town Missouri, where being much different than anyone tends to stir trouble for you. But I paraded about in my Halloween shirt and spiral-bound notebooks filled with my own terrible yet twisted tales all the same.

Something I noticed, however, was that I got a lot of crap about watching horror (and NOT doing so just to go with my "boyfriend", get scared, and bury my face in his arms), while the guys of any social click or standing could watch them avidly and no one really cared. Why were girls getting thrown into a different titles -- normal, if they flinched and got grossed out; or a freak, if their eyes light up and a smile arises from a creative decapitation.

Around a year ago, I stumbled upon Ax Wound Zine, a delightful breath of fresh air in the horrow community. Ax Wound Zine: Gender in the Horror Genre is a zine dedicated to the mission of bringing attention to the women of the horror community. Founder and Editor, Hannah Forman, says this about her mission with Ax Wound:

"It is my hope that “Ax Wound” will create a dialogue about gender in the horror/slasher/gore genre — a genre typically thought to reinforce patriarchal values. I want both the zine and the website to provide a safe, stimulating environment for feminists who struggle with their enjoyment of these films, and a place to explore what these films are about, and why we love them so much."

Ax Wound has caught some impressive attention:

I've been charmed by Ax Wound and the small bits of work I've had with Hannah, and just how comforting it is to know about all these people welcoming women with open arms in the horror community. So, of course, when she asked people to start reposting the manifesto and spread the word about Women in Horror Month, I was eager to help.

[Angel's Thoughts:]

I've been a hardcore Minion (fan of The Chronicles of Vladimir Tod) from the get go. I loved the unique premise of a young outcast male vampire and his struggles through the normal rights of passage in high school -- like bullies, the girl of his dreams, and worrying about the distance that seems to be growing between himself and his ultra-popular best friend, Henry.

And then, there are the not-so-normal things, like the other vampires, the prophecy of the Pravus, and the vampire slayers.

One of my favorite things about this series is that with every book, they just keep getting better. Granted, this trend died a little bit for me, considering Tenth Grade Bleeds is still my favorite at the moment. But Eleventh Grade Burns still has an excellent story that I really enjoyed.

However, and this is more of a personal thing for me that I don't see most of the readers really being bothered by, I think one thing that drew me away a bit were some of the actions of the characters, like Vlad seeming so hopeless at times, so ready to just quit. It's probably just a minor peeve of mine, because I love strong characters that just keep pressing forward. It's logical, and actually more realistic, to see an 11th grade boy react in this way, so it didn't really get to me too much if I reminded myself of that. So long as Vlad doesn't get complete Bella-Swan-Syndrome, I'm still pleased.

Though I love seeing the characters I adore, such as Vlad, of course, or Otis Otis (my faaaaavorite), and seeing the quirks and humor that makes them who they are, I sorta feel like some aren't growing much outside of the main story plot. It might be because I just graduated, and I have a lot of friends still in high school, but some of the kids seem a little... middle school still. There are times I completely disagree with myself, but sometimes I really wonder about whether or not I can focus with that in my mind. Then again, the things most high school kids have on their minds are a tad different considering their lack of fangs, and the books are geared a little more for younger readers as well. So, there are some issues that really wouldn't be appropriate to upgrade Vlad to. So, that's something else that just bugs me, and isn't actually a real issue.

Now, the positives -- not that the other things were more than my personal peeves:

The little things that bothered me, only did so at the beginning, and probably because I had just finished a book in which sex, drugs, cursing, etc all ruled the characters. After I got back into the right setting, I really loved it. I was rather fond the new character, Dorian, as well as the trials and danger Vlad was put through and his developing relationships with the other characters. Not to mention, the plot twisted and turned and left you with an ending that will make every Minion scream in desperate need for Twelfth Grade Kills.

So, really, Eleventh Grade Burns will be a hit with all Minions, and leave them craving more. I know that I certainly can't wait to sink my teeth into the final installment, Twelfth Grade Kills.

If you're a fan of the Chronicles of Vladimir Tod, then this book will be a hit for you. Be sure to check it out this February when it hits shelves!

I fell in love with I Wanna Be Your Joey Ramone the first time I read it, placing Stephanie Kuehnert on my life of favorite writers ever. Her right to remain on this list was confirmed with her second novel, Ballads of Suburbia.

I've gotta say, I really think I might love Ballads of Suburbia a little more than I Wanna Be Your Joey Ramone, mainly because I could really closely relate to Kara, the main character, probably more than any character I've ever read before. She feels real, and that's something I adore about Kuehnert's writing. Both of her books feel like they could be real, either like you're reading a memoir, or you're remembering your past or listening to a friend's story. There were definitely several parts that felt like pieces of my past. I had a few dreams that I was Kara while I was reading it. This book is that powerful. Not to mention, you laugh, cry, and actually get a little depressed once you finish reading it, because you really don't want it to end. Ballads is one of the few books to actually make me cry, and I think it's because of how similar I felt to the main character.

Ballads is right up there with my top favorite books of all time. I've said it a few times, and I'm more than willing to say it again -- Stephanie Kuehnert deserves to be a New York Times Bestseller. She's a talented writer with amazing books, and one of the authors I'll be pushing in a little upcoming project I'm going to be working on. =]

So, head out to your local bookstore or get on Amazon RIGHT NOW and purchase this book. I promise -- you will NOT regret it.

I love Lisa McMann's unique writing style, and I love the Wake series thus far. I read my ARC of Wake in one sitting, and read Fade before bed. I simply cannot put these books down until they're done. So, I'm very excited to read third and final installment.

The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare

I’ve got to say, I am 100% addicted to these books, and have been for some time now. I decided to wait to post my review until AFTER I finally got to finish City of Glass, the third book in the series. If it wasn’t for the fact my mother took off with my copy of City of Glass before I had the chance to read it, I would’ve had it finished quite some time back. I finished it not too long ago, but never got around to posting my review of the series thus far.

City of Bones:

It has been a long time since a book has captured me quite like the Harry Potter books did, and I believe the only other book series to come close was the Vampire Kisses series. But when I began City of Bones, I knew I had fallen in love again.
In City of Bones, we are introduced to the concept that there are, in fact, real creatures and monsters and angels. We come to know some of the most amazing characters I’ve ever read -- some of which are Clary, Jace, and Simon. Clary stumbles upon a world she’d never imagined could exist, and her life changes forever. Especially when there’s a handsome yet mysterious (not to mention egotistical) Shadowhunter named Jace, who instantly clashes with Clary’s best friend, Simon, who has been in love with Clary for years.
I really hated putting City of Bones down, and once I finished it, I immediately arranged to go to Borders, which is an hour and something away, to purchase City of Ashes.

City of Ashes:

I always fear the books that come after the first, especially if I really loved the first book. Luckily for me, City of Ashes did not disappoint.
Clary’s story continues as she learns more about the world of the Shadowhunters -- the world she had never existed before her very eyes. You see more into the fascinating world created so skillfully by Cassandra Clare, and learn about all the different creatures that are out there.
Really, there isn’t a lot of detail I can add about City of Ashes with spoiling anything. But I will say the end of this book is the kind of cliffhanger that makes you ache to read the next book. Unfortunately for me, when I finished City of Ashes, City of Glass had yet to be published.

City of Glass:

Though it wasn’t that much of a wait, I was still eager to pick up my copy of City of Glass when I finally got the chance. If it weren’t for an arc I had to read at the time, I would’ve dove into it immediately. So, of course, my mom ran off with City of Glass, because she had borrowed the first two from me.
But when I finally got to read City of Glass -- I could not stop. I was so hooked, I read at every single free moment I could manage. I’d stay up late and wake up early. And it was all worth it, every single page. I laughed, I cried, and I felt like the series was being done justice. One of my biggest peeves is when characters stop being themselves to be whatever the author wants them to be. I was very pleased Cassandra Clare hasn’t turned out to be one of those authors.

Now, with City of Fallen Angels in the works, plus a new series in the same universe, The Infernal Devices (the first book is The Clockwork Angel) coming out in the future -- I expect a great deal from Cassandra Clare and her writing. I hope to see more fantastic books that I can’t put down, books that capture me just like Harry Potter did, from Ms. Clare.
With Christmas just around the corner, I recommend this series for the avid reader in your life. I’ve never recommended it to someone who didn’t love it, so far.

Top Five Choices for Christmas Gifts

I figured since my comback week was Christmas week, I'd start things off for those of you that are last minute shoppers -- my Top Five Choices for Books that make AWESOME Christmas presents. Now, anyone can copy and paste the bestsellers out there just because that's something they know a lot of people buy. But I went through and picked some of my favorite novels that I consider worthy of Bestseller status and wrote why I thought they'd be great.

These are in no particular order, so don't assume I'm rating them according to which is my favorite:

1. Prophecy of the Sisters by Michelle Zink -- This book is the start to what I feel will be a spectacular series. It's filled with mystery, love, and lyrical writing, and is sure to be a favorite of anyone that reads it.

2. The Dust of 100 Dogs by A.S. King -- One of my favorite books of all time. Perfect for those that love a good adventure. Filled with Irish history, pirates, dogs, and a world full of other things I love -- this book is even loved by boyfriends. (Mine is reading it right now and loves it!)

3. I Wanna Be Your Joey Ramone and Ballads of Suburbia by Stephanie Kuehnert -- Okay, this is TWO books, but really -- I couldn't choose between the two. I Wanna Be Your Joey Ramone is perfect for the punk rockers of your life, as well as anyone else. And Ballads of Suburbia is just about the most perfect book you could ask for -- it fills you with hope, makes you ball your eyes out, and really breaks your heart when you finish because you just want to keep reading. Stephanie Kuehnert is one of my favorite authors of all time. And that is REALLY saying something.

4. A Certain Slant of Light by Laura Whitcomb -- This book really haunted me. The writing is beautiful, and the idea is very original. It might be my favorite book of all time, if not one of my top favorites. Either way -- this book is an ideal gift for anyone in your life.

And, last but not least --

5. Eyes Like Stars by Lisa Mantchev -- A FANTASTIC book, perfect for the theatre lovers in your life. It's another example of an ideal blend -- adventure, love, humor, heartbreak, and hope. I'm dying to read the next book in the series -- and so will whoever you give this book to.

Hoepfully, this helps you in your quest for last minute gifts for that avid reader in your life!

Okay, I know this isn't EXACTLY a book -- but as a lover of books, manga, and comics -- I'll end up throwing in a mix of the three. Besides -- this is VAMPIRE KISSES! The Vampire Kisses books are of my favorite books ever written! And the manga is just as great. So of course I'm excited to go on even more adventures with Raven and Alexander! And look at that STUNNING cover! Irresistible!

The first thing you notice when you begin reading Prophecy of the Sisters is just how beautifully it’s written. Michelle Zink has captured the story, setting, and characters all within this gorgeous and lyrical prose that draws you in from cover to cover. This is really one of those books I LOVE, because once you think you know what’s going to happen -- everything gets flipped around and keeps you guessing.

I’ve been wanting to read this book for some time, and was unspeakably excited when my ARC arrived in the mail. At first, I read only a chapter a night when I could, partially because of college limiting my reading time, and partially because it was just so good, I wanted to take my time and not rush through. But this became an impossible task after some time, because I simply HAD to know what was going to happen next.

So, I started to take the book with me to class. I’d read in between classes, before classes, and every night. Finally, I just ignored everything else one night and finished it. And OH MY GOD -- it was stunning!

Michelle Zink blends romance and mystery, sorrow and adventure, into an exquisite gothic novel that will chill you even after the final pages. It’s no surprise that I went and bought the hardback edition, because of it’s fantastic cover and because it’s one of those books that I have just fallen in love with. I’m ecstatic there will be more!

I highly recommend you go buy, read, and reread Prophecy of the Sisters ASAP!

Now this, my dear readers, is the book I'm always pleased to find when I buy new books. Stephanie Kuehnert has a gift when it comes to writing. Especially writing books that feel unbelievably real. In her debut novel, I WANNA BE YOUR JOEY RAMONE, Stephanie introduces us to Emily Black, a girl born to rock. You journey through her life, the formation of her band -- She Laughs -- and her desire to find her mother again, and understand just why she left in the first place.

When I started reading I WANNA BE YOUR JOEY RAMONE, I was working the 9 to 5 life as a volunteer in a medical clinic. I would take books in to read on my break. Needless to say, I hid out whenever I could once I began reading, and somehow managed to read every page in one day. There were times in which I completely forgot I was reading fiction because it felt so absolutely real and raw. There were times that I felt like I knew exactly what the characters felt, and times where I felt like I was being shown a life unlike my own. All the while, I still couldn't get a grasp on the fact I was reading a fictional story about a fictional girl, though I'm sure her story is likely to be lived out somewhere.

If I could, I'd kick Twilight off the "Bestseller" list and place I WANNA BE YOUR JOEY RAMONE where it should be -- on the Bestseller list. This is a book for the young, and the old. For the reader, and for the one that is searching for something that really speaks out to them about the chaos in their life.

So, if you haven't read I WANNA BE YOUR JOEY RAMONE, do so. Stephanie Kuehnert does not disappoint. Look forward to my review of her second novel, BALLADS OF SUBURBIA, as soon as I get it read. I've got to tell you, I was so excited to buy it, I went to Borders on my VACATION in Boston to pick up my copy.

Review: A Certain Slant of Light by Laura Whitcomb

This is one of my all time favorite books. Ever. I actually read A Certain Slant of Light a while back and can say honestly -- it completely blows Twilight out of the water. In my eyes, this should be a HUGE bestseller, as well as it's author -- the delightful and talented Laura Whitcomb.

In A Certain Slant of Light, you see through the eyes of a ghost that cannot move on -- Helen. You see the life of the dead in a beautifully written masterpiece. And life as a ghost is an unseen life, until, after 130 years of being invisible, human eyes finally see Helen as she drifts around in an English class. Though this frightens Helen a bit, she still feels drawn to the young man that sees her.

This haunting novel will make you feel like it's all real. And with such a powerful ending... well, you'll just have to see.

Review: Eyes Like Stars by Lisa Mantchev

And by the end of this review, you'll be dying to get your hands on a copy. Like, for instance, I was supposed to post this review before I left for my trip to Boston and Salem. But I took my sweet time reading this book because I didn't want to rush it. I savored each and every page, just as I hope everyone that reads it will.

Bertie, the lead role in Eyes Like Stars, is quite the character. I always love a book with strong main characters that you just have to fall in love with, and Bertie is just such a character. She's different, and flawed. Most everything she does seems to backfire somehow. Teamed with her ever present (and mischievous) comrades -- the fairies Peaseblossom, Cobweb, Moth, and Mustardseed -- she usually gets into trouble.

There are others that add to the delightfully diverse cast. One of my favorites was Nate, a pirate from The Little Mermaid. Or Ariel, an airy spirit from The Tempest. You admire Nate and how he treats Bertie. And Ariel -- well, he is just one of the most memorable characters ever.

The Théâtre Illuminata, Book One: Eyes Like Stars is a book for everyone -- young or old; actors or readers; lovers or fighters. I highly reccomend you purchase Eyes Like Stars now. You'll be begging for the sequel, just as I am now.

Review: Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince (Movie)

Okay, since Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, the 6th installment of the Harry Potter series, came out yesterday, I thought I'd review that this week. I'm a HUGE hardcore Harry Potter fan, and have been since the first book came out. Granted, I love the books a million times more, the movies are still pretty good.

With the Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince movie, we watch as young Harry has to learn to live as The Chosen One in the public eye. But it is obvious within the first few moments that Harry is also growing up, and with that, he is focusing on more than just Hogwarts and death and Voldemort. He's thinking about life and girls. He's showing his youthful side, the side of him that is occasionally overshadowed by his duty to protect himself and those he loves.

And Harry isn't the only one -- Ron and Hermione return in this movie, too. This time, we see more of the romantic side from the characters. There's snogging (making out) and love potions involved. Not to mention, the occasional broken heart.

Ron is trying out for Keeper on the Quidditch team, all the while being obsessed over by a girl, which stirs up jealousy, and also provides some of the much needed comic relief in the movie. And while we start to see the more confident side of Ron, we begin to see just how close Hermione and Harry are. When one is hurting, the other is right there for them.

Another important piece of both the movie and the book is Draco Malfoy. Personally, I am a huge fan of Draco, and everything he brings to the table in the Harry Potter books. So, of course, Half Blood Prince is one of my favorites because Draco is such a key character in it.

We start to see just what Draco is made of, and just how dedicated he is to Voldemort and the Death Eaters. While Harry is the Chosen one for the good guys, Draco is the Chosen one for the dark wizards. He is given a specific task to accomplish, which worries his mother. So, to ensure her son's safety, she requests a professor to protect Draco while he is away at Hogwarts: Snape.

This is one of the darkest and more heartbreaking of the installments. Though the movie was very good, and I did enjoy it, I was also somewhat disappointed. Several important things to the final story were replaced with romance. Though I understand it's place in the movie, I still wish they would have given more to the idea of the Half Blood Prince. But the acting was phenomenal -- each actor provided their best performances yet. Daniel Radcliffe showed just how much he has grown as an actor, providing the amazing range Harry needed to go through during the movie.

Though I wish some more of the story could have been in it, I understand you can only fit in SO much. So, all in all, I really loved it, and highly suggest you go see it, especially if you are a fan. =]

Review: Monster's Proof by Richard Lewis

Monster's Proof is a horror novel that brings together pure mathematics with adventure, humor, romance, and some of the most original characters you'll ever meet.

What can I say about this book -- other than it is intelligent, beautifully written, and very original.

Being a horrid math student myself, the concept of Algebra itself sometimes seems like a horror novel to me all in itself. Now, Richard Lewis has made my worst mathematical fears into a novel.

I’m quite pleased with the wonderful flow of MONSTER’S PROOF. Every time I sat down with MONSTER’S PROOF, I was sucked in, sitting and easily reading a ton of pages -- really, two nights of solid reading is all it took. It is so absolutely fascinating!

The July 7th release of MONSTER’S PROOF is exciting because a new book in YA horror has emerged as a formidable novel foe.

Review: Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher

TENTH GRADE BLEEDS Launch Party!

The party was AMAZING!

My entire group dressed up -- including the boyfriend & me. Obviously, we were the Joker and Harley Quinn. The decorations were FANGTASTIC!

As was the face painting. (It was fun having loads of people come up to me & Taylor, knowing who we were & taking pics!)

Even Heather's husband, Paul (one of my absolute favorite people on the planet, might I add) was in on the party spirit -- he was dressed as Otis Otis! We found my shirt and his outfit needed to be documented in a photo together.

And, of course, another of my absolute favorite people, and the whole reason we went out of state -- Heather.

All in all, it was absolutely amazing! And a load of fun, with games, goodies, and prizes. Not to mention Tenth Grade Bleeds was available for purchase!

It was really neat seeing all these people there, celebrating Vlad, screaming for Heather, and just all around honestly loving Heather and her books. I've known Heather since the first release, and recall my first signing with her, and how each have grown since. And honestly, I'm very proud to know someone so wonderful who has come so far.

Review:

The only sucking this series does involves blood. I am absolutely in love with The Chronicles of Vladimir Tod! Not only are they witty, original, and all around amazing -- they keep getting better. Not a lot of books continue to get better with each installment, but Heather Brewer has managed to accomplish this and then some!

You follow the life of Vladimir Tod -- as well as the obstacles associated with being a teenage vampire. There are the normal things, like his crush, Meredith, and the bullies. But throw into the mix the fact that he is a creature of the night, living with his Aunt Nelly after his parents died in a mysterious house fire. With each book you get pulled in farther and fartheer, with new characters and new challenges for Vlad to overcome.

I super highly reccomend this series to anyone and everyone!

Interview: Heather Brewer!

The one, the only -- the fantastic Heather Brewer!

1.) What was the inspiration for The Chronicles of Vladimir Tod?

I was extremely unpopular growing up and as such, I know what it's like to feel like a total freak. The story of Vlad is very much a way for me to deal with the issues I faced every day as a teen. Also, my son Jacob is very much like Vlad. So Vlad is kind of a half-me/half-Jacob hybrid.

2.) What are some of your favorite things about being published?

My absolute favorite part of being published is getting to hang out with my Minions regularly. Going to work in my jammies is a close second.

3.) What made you want to be a published author?

I learned quickly to escape into books, into other worlds when I was younger. I've always wanted to provide someone else with that escapism.

4.) What inspires you?

Everything. Dreams, reality, conversations, silence. Everything.

5.) You have an ever-growing Minion Horde. Tell us a bit about your thoughts of the relationship between authors and their fans?

I think a strong relationship between readers and writers is crucial to success. As an author, I'm having a conversation with my readers. Without them, what's the point?

6.) What is the craziest thing to happen to you at an event?

A girl asked me if I'd sign her butt once. I declined. Oh, and a boy asked me if anyone ever followed me home after events – when I said no, he said (in a creepy stalker voice), "Well, how would you know, with all those people on the road?"

7.) If Vlad had his own soundtrack, what are some songs that would be on it?

"Animal I Have Become" by Three Days Grace is absolutely Vlad (especially in the third book, Tenth Grade Bleeds). Some other songs I'd have to include are "Shut Me Up" by Mindless Self Indulgence and "Hurt" by Nine Inch Nails.

8.) And what about yourself? Do you have a theme song?

I'd love for my theme song to be Darth Vader's theme music, but it's probably closer to "White and Nerdy" by Weird Al.

9.) Any advice for the aspiring authors out there?

Follow my formula for getting past those "stuck" moments: butt + chair = writing.

Review: WAKE & FADE by Lisa McMann

For seventeen-year-old Janie, getting sucked into other people's dreams is getting old. Especially the falling dreams, the naked-but-nobody-notices dreams, and the sex-crazed dreams. Janie's seen enough fantasy booty to last her a lifetime.

She can't tell anybody about what she does -- they'd never believe her, or worse, they'd think she's a freak. So Janie lives on the fringe, cursed with an ability she doesn't want and can't control.

Then she falls into a gruesome nightmare, one that chills her to the bone. For the first time, Janie is more than a witness to someone else's twisted psyche. She is a participant....

I must admit, when I first cracked my ARC of WAKE, by Lisa McMann, open and saw it was all written in present tense and third person, I was a tad unenthused. I’ve read a lot of bad things about books written in the present tense, but I proceeded to read the first chapter.

That’s when I found myself hooked. You are reeled in by Janie’s unusual ability to get sucked into peoples dreams, and how that affects her life drastically. She’s seen enough fantasy booty to last her a lifetime. But then a strange nightmare keeps recurring to her. A strange house, a grotesque kitchen, and this terrifying monster with knives for fingers coming for her. Sounds a little like Freddy Krueger, I know.

You’re heart goes out to Janie, as well. She struggles through several obstacles aside from her accidental dream-invasions. Like her rough home life, and her rollercoaster with a boy named Cabel that changes how she sees everything. There’s also her job when she’s not in school -- she helps out at Heather’s Nursing Home. She works as much as she can for what she can, and everyone loves her there. Janie has to work, so she can save up for college and take care of herself. Her mothers welfare check only covers the rent and the booze. Besides, she finds a good companion in Martha, a kindly old blind woman. When Martha dies, she leaves a note, along with five-thousand dollars for college, for Janie. This note makes Janie’s heart stutter. This note becomes a catalyst for the rest of the series. Like any good book, there is the exciting and unexpected ending, which you’ll just have to read for yourself.

All in all, WAKE was a thrill ride. It’s obvious with Lisa McMann’s debut novel, she’s got a good career ahead of her. I understand now why WAKE has hit National Bestseller status.

For Janie and Cabel, real life is getting tougher than the dreams. They're just trying to carve out a little (secret) time together, but no such luck. Disturbing things are happening at Fieldridge High, yet nobody's talking. When Janie taps into a classmate's violent nightmares, the case finally breaks open--but nothing goes as planned. Not even close. Janie's in way over her head, and Cabe's shocking behavior has grave consequences for them both.

Worse yet, Janie learns the truth about herself and her ability. And it's bleak. Seriously, brutally bleak. Not only is her fate as a Dream Catcher sealed, but what's to come is way darker than she'd even feared...

With the sequel, FADE, things only get better.
In FADE, you dive farther into Janie’s gift and learn about what darkness it holds as well. Caleb, Captain, and even Janie’s car, Ethel, all reappear in this chilling new installment. Granted, I cannot say too much about FADE, because I don’t want to give anything away if you haven’t read either -- I will say, at least, that I love both of these books. And FADE is just as awesome -- if not more -- than WAKE.

Interview: A.S. King!

A couple of days ago, I posted a review for The Dust of 100 Dogs by A.S. King. Luckily for us, my readers, she agreed to do an interview with me!

First of all -- YOU ROCK! I absolutely LOVED The Dust of 100 Dogs!
Now that I have that out, onward to the questions:

1.) How did you get the idea for The Dust of 100 Dogs, and what effect did living in Ireland have on your novel?
The book wouldn’t exist if I hadn’t lived in Ireland . I got the idea while walking my dogs during the time I was learning about Cromwell’s 1649/50 invasion. I realized there was a very good chance Cromwell’s troops used the very road I was walking on—which made the history lesson very powerful to me. The more I learned about Irish history, in general, the more I felt the urge to write about it. I hope to write more about Irish history in future books.

2.) What made you want to write books for publication?
I know I wanted to write books when I was in 8th grade—but the idea I had then was more of a non-fiction thing. I always wrote poetry and worked hard at my research papers and other writing assignments. Even in art school (I have a photography degree) I thought that my pictures would one day land in a book, with essays. But I didn’t have the time or opportunity (or guts) to write until I moved to Ireland when I was 24. I remember the book that pushed me to say, “Hey! I want to do this now!” It was Salman Rushdie’s The Satanic Verses. If I ever write a book as enjoyable and intelligent as that one, I will be really happy.

3.) What was your publication journey like -- was it smooth, or rocky?
Rocky and long. I wrote 7 novels over 12 years before I found an agent. But now that I’m on this side of it, I’m thrilled it took me that long. Sound crazy? Maybe it is—but what I learned was amazing. Patience, great writing habits, and most importantly, the ability to write books for myself, without caring about publishing. I write for me, and I do it because I love it. This is more important than I can say.

4.) What inspires you?
Music, great books, great art, and great people. I have met many people who have overcome ugly things. Those people inspire me greatly. I feel our culture gives attention to shallow stuff (the various weights and wardrobe accessories of TV stars, for example) while ignoring the depth of human experience. I am inspired by the reality of human experience, even if it isn’t easy to look at, because it’s real and people who navigate through difficult times are heroes.

5.) What is one of the craziest things that you’ve experienced at an event?
I have to say—having so many of my former classmates turn out for my first local event was wild! For an hour, it was like a mini-reunion, and it was inexplicably cool. Their support is incredible and just goes to show you—you never know what’s going to happen in the future. If you’d have asked me in high school if I’d even THINK about going to my 20th class reunion, I’d have laughed at you. Now, I see people from high school every month or two, and enjoy their company immensely. Also, since we’re on the subject of crazy things & events…I find it pretty crazy when haters come out to confront authors. Being a positive person, I find the motive a bit odd. Why not go to an event of an author you like and say nice things, rather than openly hate an author whose book you didn’t like? I mean—who doesn’t know that reading is a subjective thing?

6.) If there was a soundtrack for The Dust of 100 Dogs, what songs would be on it?

Write every day. Read a lot. Then write some more. Then read some more. Learn to write because you love writing and forget about the publishing business at first. (And don’t forget that stories come from life experiences, so all that crappy stuff that happens to you will actually come in handy one day.)

Review: The Dust of 100 Dogs by A.S. King

Now that that is out of the way --
The Dust of 100 Dogs by A.S. King is one of the most original things I have ever read in my life. It’s filled with some of my favorite things: pirates, Ireland, dogs, violence, kick-ass characters, and adventure. The characters are so real and well developed, it’s breathtaking. You really feel for Emer and Saffron. You cheer for them. Your heart breaks as Emer struggles and suffers. You want to help Saffron get back to Jamaica. You just honestly care.
Not to mention -- Emer is my hero.

I can’t say much else without spoiling, so I’ll leave it at this:
Buy this book. Now.
Read it several times.

Not only does the gorgeous cover of Graceling draw you in, but so does the ever-so appealing summary. From everything the outside practically screams about this book, you’d assume it’s be a good read. But, alas, you’d be assuming wrong…
This is a fantastic read!
I get so bored with the damsel in distress fantasy books, and this book strays far FAR from that. In Graceling, you meet Katsa -- a strong and feisty girl that you’d never want to cross. In the land of seven kingdoms, Gracelings are typically exploited for their Graces. And Katsa especially -- for her Grace is killing. Her uncle, King Randa, let’s his men train Katsa to control her gifts, until she finally is capable of killing any man in any manner -- armed or unarmed. She becomes feared, and the puppet of Randa.
When she meets Po, everything changes, and Katsa finds herself defying Randa and trying to prove she isn’t a savage monster.
I was absolutely awe-stuck by this book. You take Katsa into your heart -- you love her because she is a true and strong character. And together, Po and Katsa make the kind of heroes you dream of reading about. Kristin Cashore has delivered a powerful tale, and I eagerly awake her next book -- Fire (Fall 2009).

Long Overdue

Interview: Stephanie Kuehnert

Can you tell us some about your earlier days with writing?

Well, I've been writing seriously since high school. In high school, I focused more writing 'zines. I wrote a series of feminist zines and then three per-zines (or personal zines), which contained personal essays, mostly about the things I was going through at the time, getting through the pain from an abusive relationship and trying to help drug-addicted friends. Those were some pretty painful years. After high school I wrote a bunch of short stories... if you can call them that. They were really more prose poems. I desperately needed feedback to help me find my voice and the direction of my work and I finally got that when I was 21 and started attended the Fiction Writing program at Columbia College Chicago. Being around other writers really inspired me and I started writing furiously and getting feedback that helped me shape my stories into something. That early work would lead to my first and second novels.

What sparked your inspiration for I WANNA BE YOUR JOEY RAMONE?

I've loved punk rock since junior high and have been particularly inspired by female punk musicians. I wanted to be one, but I don't have that kind of talent, so I created Emily because I wanted to live vicariously through her. I also would love to live in a world where a female-fronted band is the biggest thing out there, so I created that world in a novel. It's a tribute to all the female musicians I've loved.

Has your life changed considerably now that you're a published author?

Nah, not really except for that now I get fanmail which is awesome and makes me happier than I can tell you. I did quit my full-time job, but that's not because writing is paying the bills. I'm back to the part-time job I had in grad school, bartending. It gives me more time to write and I'm taking a gamble, hoping it will pay off and I don't regret giving up benefits and retirement and all of that!

What is one of the most unusual events that has occurred since IWBYJR debuted? Any bizzare signings?

I did have a kind of bizarre event recently. A reading where my audience was two librarians and a teenage girl (those are the people I'd expect) and then a younger boy and two older men. Like the boy was probably in 6th or 7th grade which is too young for my book and one of the older men was probably in his 70s or 80s. He asked me to define punk rock. He also asked why my hair didn't match my shoes (my bangs and converse sneakers are both pink, but different shades). I still had fun though. I had to choose a new section to read at the last minute because of the age of the boy, but both of the older men bought the book. I don't think the one who asked me about punk rock will read it, but I think the other might! On the other hand, this Sunday I am reading a major rock club in Chicago with Irvine Welsh, the legendary author of Trainspotting. It's going to be a much different audience and *gulp* way bigger... It takes all kinds. That is the fun of it!

What has been the best experience on your journey to becoming an author so far?

Oh there are so many! I've meet some amazing authors. I've done some great events. I've gotten to talk to musicians I admire. Working with MTV Books has been totally amazing. But probably the best thing of all is hearing from and especially meeting people who enjoyed the book. Especially meeting teen girls who remind me of me at that age. I am so happy that my book provided them with an outlet because I know how much I needed that.

"Women Who Rock Wednesday" is a brilliant idea! Why did you decide to honor women of the arts in your blog?

Well, I started by featuring 5 women who rocked during the week that IWBYJR came out. It seemed right since IWBYJR was a tribute to the women who rocked my world in many ways. And then I realized that there were so many more women that I wanted to feature and that unfortunately in many artistic fields (music certainly comes to mind), women still aren't given as much attention as men. I wanted to do something about that, so I decided to start featuring women that rock my world. I'm trying to mix it up and feature all kinds of artists and people at different places in their careers. This month I already interviewed a young fashion designer and I will be interviewing a pretty well-established author and a band that I think is going to be the next big thing. At least they deserve to be. Since I understood what feminism was, I've been trying to empower women, so this is just another part of that. And Wednesdays definitely get more hits on my blog than any other day so I'm glad people are enjoying it!

Who is your favorite rockstar?

My all-time favorite rock star is Kurt Cobain. It sounds cheesy but Nirvana truly changed my life. I admire Kurt as a musician and a human being. He used the fame he had to get the word out about causes that meant a lot to him and about bands that deserved attention. He was very supportive of women and I quoted him at the beginning of IWBYJR about women being the future of rock n roll. I wish he'd stuck around, the world needs him.

My favorite living rock star is Courtney Love. I know she's controversial, but she's total rock 'n' roll, baby and her lyrics, particularly on her first two albums, I wish I could write the novel equivalent to that. She's so honest and raw.

Finally, do you have any upcoming projects? Can you tell us a little about them?

Yep, my second book, BALLADS OF SUBURBIA, is due out from MTV Books in Summer 2009. Probably in July. It's about a teenage girl who has always felt like a misfit in her suburban town. She finally finds her place among the other punks, skaters, freaks, and geeks that hang out in a park at the center of town, but her life and the lives of her friends are pretty troubled and things start to spiral out of control. It's basically a classic coming of age story.
